One quilt. Three jobs. Zero excuses to be cold and wet.

The Wind Gap Alpha is built from 90gsm Alpha Direct sewn to a layer of Ion 1.1 — giving you the legendary warmth and breathability of Alpha Direct with a windproof, water-resistant shell that laughs at the conditions that send lesser gear into the stuff sack for good. Rated to 50°F, it’s your go-to for shoulder season nights when the temperature is tolerable but the wind is not.

Alpha Direct 90 Insulation + Ion 1.1 Windproof Shell

Alpha Direct 90 is a 90gsm active insulation prized by ultralight hikers and mountain guides for one reason: it breathes. Instead of just trapping heat, it dumps moisture vapor about as fast as your body makes it, so you stay warm without waking up clammy. It’s lofty, next-to-skin soft, and packs down small.

The catch with any active insulation is wind — a stiff breeze blows straight through it and strips the warm air away. That’s the job the Ion 1.1 shell does. Ion 1.1 is a 1.1 oz taffeta nylon with a tight weave that blocks wind and sheds light moisture while still letting the Alpha Direct breathe underneath. Sewn together, the two layers hold the loft and comfort of Alpha Direct behind a shell that keeps its warm microclimate in place — warmth you can actually hang onto on an exposed night. The White Alpha 120 steps the insulation up to a heftier 120gsm for a little more warmth in the same build, and the Black Alpha Trail 90 swaps in Polartec’s two-way-stretch Alpha Trail fabric — a touch lighter and packs even smaller — behind a dark olive Ion shell instead of black. Every color is the same 50°F build; pick the insulation and shell combination you like.

Three Ways to Use It: Liner, Top Quilt, or Underquilt

Windproof Liner

Pair it with your existing quilt or sleeping bag for a windproof, water-resistant upgrade that adds warmth and weather protection without bulk.

Standalone Top Quilt

Light enough to carry solo, capable enough to use alone on warmer nights. The Ion layer keeps the wind from stealing your warmth.

Standalone Underquilt

Pair with the JRB Underquilt Suspension Kit and hang it beneath your hammock for insulation from below. Cold air doesn’t stand a chance — and when you climb in hot, ease the end draw cords off and the quilt eases away from the hammock, letting air move across your back. We call it opening the windows.

Why One Sewn Quilt Beats Layering

You can get partway here by slipping our Alpha Direct Quilt Liner inside its separate Windproof Shell — and that’s a great system. The Wind Gap Alpha sews those two ideas into a single quilt. Nothing to line up, nothing to shift out of place in the night, nothing to leave behind at the last campsite — one piece does the work of two, in a shape sized to hang as an underquilt, drape as a top quilt, or slip inside your bag.

Named for the Trail

Wind Gap sits in Pennsylvania’s ridge country — a notch in Blue Mountain where the wind funnels through, the kind of gap that gave this quilt its name. Northbound thru-hikers reach it in the thick of summer, June and July, when the mid-Atlantic turns hot and humid and the rocks hold the day’s heat long after dark. Nights here don’t get cold so much as sticky, with a wind that cuts across the exposed ridgeline. The Wind Gap Alpha was built for exactly that: breathable Alpha Direct that won’t cook you in the humidity, and an Ion 1.1 shell that blocks the wind coming through the gap.

Handmade in Pennsylvania by Jacks R Better — making quilts since 2004. In-stock quilts ship the same or next business day.

* Underquilt use requires the JRB Underquilt Suspension Kit, sold separately.

⚠️ These sell out as fast as we make them. Each color is hand-built in small batches. In stock? It ships the same or next business day. Sold out? Order anyway — every restock we’ve had has arrived already spoken for by backorders, so the queue is the only reliable way to get one. We’ll sew yours and ship it in about 2–4 weeks.
